SKOPJE, Macedonia -- A senior-level Macedonian delegation is visiting Brussels on Thursday (September 4th) to push for a date to start EU accession negotiations, local media reported. Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Ivica Bocevski and Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki are scheduled to meet with EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. "We have achieved significant progress and we go to Brussels to defend our position and to insist on receiving a date," Bocevksi told a press conference Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Bocevski attended a ceremony marking the completion of an EU project to assist the foreign ministry in establishing a national visa information centre, with an eye to a visa-free regime with the EU in 2009. The technical assistance project envisions connecting 45 Macedonian diplomatic missions, six major border crossing points and two airports with the visa centre through an internet-based IT system.
In other news, UN special envoy Matthew Nimetz has invited negotiators from Macedonia and Greece to a new round of talks in the longstanding name dispute between the two countries.
